Welcome to our first newsletter for Term 2 and as I look over the term calendar… we have another busy and engaging term ahead!
When children wear their uniform, they really do show ‘pride and respect for their School’ and we notice their positive attitude, behaviour and engagement at School. As it is becoming cooler, we know many families may need to purchase some ‘warmer’ uniform options... so, our School’s Uniform Store is fully stocked. Order forms/prices are freely available from the Office. (A reminder that casual clothes, especially hoodies and jeans, are not items of uniform and are not appropriate to be worn at school.)
Also, as the weather cools, Terms 2 and 3 ‘before school play rule’ is only on either hard surfaces or in a child’s classroom. We do not use the sand pits, play equipment or bark areas due to this often being damp and wet. Staying off/out of these spaces in the early morning ensures that both children remain dry, and shoes do not bring excess dirt or mess into classrooms/carpet areas.
At school, we describe these mornings as ‘RED FLAG’ times… which means no play on bark, equipment or grass until the flags are down. On non wet weather days, the RED FLAGS are taken down by recess, as the morning dew has had enough time to dry off.
During and following rainy days, the RED FLAGS may remain out longer. We also only play with footballs from recess onwards and only on the grassed oval area (for everyone’s safety, no footballs before school or to be played on the hard surface areas).
All teachers will be reinforcing these before school play area rules, and we seek the support also of families to help us tune children into these safety and wellbeing expectations.
Jack Jumpers Championship Trophy Visit – Monday 13 May
We are very lucky to have been chosen for a visit on the Jack Jumpers Trophy Tour. On Monday, classes 2-6 will have a basketball session with the JJ Community Coaches and will see the NBL trophy. (NB players will not be attending, as they are all away interstate or overseas playing in other competitions.)
Class teachers will take their iPads and snap lots of photos for sharing with families on ClassDojo.
Growing Up Program (3s to 6s)
This year Family Planning Tasmania will be delivering the Growing Up Program to our students from Grades 3 to 6.
The Growing Up Program (GUP) is Tasmania’s leading relationships, sexuality and protective behaviours program for students in Primary Schools.
It is facilitated by an experienced team of Family Planning Tasmania educators, is age and developmentally appropriate, sequential and evidence based.
GUP reflects the latest in sexual and reproductive health research, and aims to maximise learning outcomes, and increase positive communication between parents/carers and their child/children.
The program is aligned to the:
- Australian Curriculum
- Early Years Learning Framework
- Respectful Relationships Teaching and Learning Package
The ‘Growing Up Program’ is a key educational program that all schools provide each year to support every student’s growth, development, health, and wellbeing.
Our GUP educators will encourage children to talk with families at home about what they learn.
A copy of the GUP Information relevant to your child’s program has been sent home:
- Upper Primary Gr 5s and 6s program – (3 x 60min session in class groupings and 1 x 30min small group sessions) is scheduled from Monday 13 to Wednesday 15 May
- Lower Primary Gr 3s and Gr 4s Program – (3 x 45 - 50 min session in grade/class groupings) dates are from Monday 20 to Tuesday 21 May
and importantly,
- All parents/carers are invited to attend an in-person information session (relevant for all programs and grades) on either:
- Monday 13 May from 8:30 – 8:55am in our Launching into Learning Classroom or
- Monday 20 May from 8:30 – 9:00am in our Launching into Learning Classroom
Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
School Cross Country Event
On Thursday 16 May we will be holding our Cross Country, with Kinder to Grade 6 students participating. It is expected that all students will complete the Cross-Country course (either running or walking).
Students will compete in Houses, (same as the Athletics Carnival), Tasman (yellow), Robbins (blue), Flinders (green) and Bass (red) and are asked to wear the appropriate coloured t-shirt on the day as well as suitable footwear.
It might be wet underfoot so a second pair of shoes and socks will be handy.
Please make sure that students have plenty to drink on the day.
Approximate times for events are:
- 11:40 Gr 4 (three laps around fitness track)
- 12:00 Grade 5 (three laps around fitness track)
- 12:20 Grade 6 (three laps around fitness track)
Lunch
- 1:30 Grade 1 (two laps around fitness track)
- 1:45 Kinder (one lap around oval)
- 1:55 Prep (one laps around fitness track)

All families and friends are welcome to attend; however, there will be a separate area provided for spectators, with chairs available to sit on.
ANZAC Day March
On 25 April, Table Cape marched with pride in our local community ANZAC Service! Outstanding respect was shown by all of our 38 children, accompanying families and staff as they proudly represented our school.
Our school group was led by our amazing Student Leaders who represented us in the formal wreath laying ceremony.
A huge ‘thank you’ to all children, families and staff for supporting this special event held during the school holiday period and a special thank you to Mrs Type-Farrell for her organisation.
Road Safety – Safe Pedestrian Road Crossing
We have been asked by a number of parents to remind all members of our School Community to use the designated school crossing before and after school. Gibbons Street, directly opposite the length of our school grounds, is a particularly high traffic area for these short times of the day.
Adults are the best role models to teach and reinforce to all children safe road crossing practices. This may mean walking a short distance on the footpath to get the crossing but will ensure no-one is moving between parked vehicles onto the road.
Children riding bikes and scooters are asked to dismount and walk beside these when going directly over the road crossing area. This allows time for both riders and moving traffic to clearly see who needs to cross and ensures enough visibility and stopping time for everyone.
Generally, the vehicle traffic has been moving according to the designated 40km school zone speed and following the ‘stopping for all at the crossing’ road rules. Please use the School Crossing to help keep all children safe.
Now in its 25th year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) on Friday 10 May, is an annual event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment.
Walk Safely to School Day falls within ‘National Road Safety Week’. A key Road Safety walking message highlights that all children up to the age of 10 years old need to hold an adult hand when crossing the road. “Children have poor peripheral vision and find it hard to judge the speed and distance of cars.”
You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:
- Walking with them the whole way to school
- If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.
Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.
Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids are Smarter Kids!

Safeguarding Training for our Parent/Family Helpers
We really value and want as many family helpers working to support our students, through coaching sporting teams, parent help in classrooms and especially by having parent helpers attending class Excursions.
From this year onwards (and annually), all volunteers (parent/adult helpers) must complete Safeguarding Training modules. The training is compulsory and is designed to help us all understand how to better safeguard kids in Tasmania.
By completing the modules you will learn what to do if you believe a child or young person is being harmed and make sure you are doing all you can to prevent this from happening. You will also learn what your reporting requirements are. It’s important to also make sure you download and save your certificate to verify you have completed your training (our office will keep a copy on file for 2024).
We are encouraging family members to complete the training as soon as possible, and it will need to be completed before you can come into school to work with any children and young people this year. More information and an access link can be found on the DEYCP public website for volunteers to complete this new requirement: Safeguarding Training - Department for Education, Children and Young People
Celebrating Student Success…(It’s great to receive information from families about student achievements outside of school)
On the 16 March Stella competed at the 134th Wynyard Show. She exhibited two ponies: Gambler, a Shetland pony and Magic, a Section A Welsh pony.
Gambler was awarded Champion Hunter Pony and Magic won Champion Show Pony.
Stella’s special highlight of the day was riding in the show’s Grand Parade where she got to see and wave to lots of her friends from school.
Congratulations on your outstanding achievements Stella!
Finally today, what a great start to Term 2 everyone!
Classes have quickly settled back into their learning routines; with the added bonus of creating ‘Mother’s Day’ cards and wishes this week.
I do hope all of our significant ‘mothers and mothering-care givers’ enjoy some very special hugs and extra care on this upcoming Sunday.
